I typically run several Microsoft Virtual PC environments and move between them as my needs change. When I first set up my initial virtual environments, I create as many as I need. One will be my main development environment. This has been helpful as I keep a backup image of the initial environment immediately after I create it. As I try out beta releases or third-party add-ons, I may begin to dirty up my environment. Because the uninstall process may not completely clean up Windows installations, the virtual environments come in handy. For example, at a local user group session, a presenter was demonstrating a tool that integrated with Visual Studio. Instead of installing the tool in my current development environment, I cloned a fresh environment and used it to try the tool. Afterward, I turned off the environment and deleted it to clear up space for another environment. My primary environment wasn t affected at all. I also create two drives within my virtual environment. The C: drive holds the operating system, while the D: drive holds my data. These drives are represented by virtual hard drives. And if I decide to clone my data drive, I can use it with another system as I see it. Because I typically develop every project by using source control, I can start with a fresh environment, pull down the current project versions, and start development again. To further leverage virtualization, you can also create a virtual hard-drive installation of your development environment and set the files to read-only. Then you can create a new virtual image that uses the read-only copy as a base image while keeping all changes on the

Figure 6 11. The login prompt (rendered using /Views/Account/LogOn.aspx)

Note When AccountController detects an authorization failure (e.g., because the user entered an incorrect password), it registers a validation error in ModelState using an empty string as the key parameter. That makes it a model-level error rather than a property-level error, because it s not associated with any single property. Our view then displays model-level errors using a validation summary list by calling Html.ValidationSummary(true). The parameter, true, tells the validation summary to exclude property-level errors and display only model-level errors. Without this parameter, you d find that property-specific errors would appear both in the validation summary and next to the property s input control.

Tip Including third party libraries in a SharePoint 2010 install is a whole other topic. Basically, you are going to need to modify the web.config file either directly. A better practice would be to add a solution package .wsp that includes the .dlls you need referenced and added to safe controls. You can update your web.config file through a feature event receiver that fires on a feature activation and uses SPWebConfigModification as the classes involved in adding the necessary elements to your configuration.

This takes care of handling login attempts. Only after supplying valid credentials (i.e., admin/mysecret) will visitors be granted an authentication cookie and thus be allowed to access any of the action methods on AdminController.

secondary image. When you are given the option to create a new virtual hard drive, you can choose the Differencing option, as shown in Figure 1-1.

Warning When you re sending login details from browser to server, it s best to encrypt the transmission with SSL (i.e., over HTTPS). To do this, you need to set up SSL on your web server, which is beyond the scope of this chapter Visual Studio s built-in web server doesn t support it. See the IIS documentation for details on how to configure SSL.

That said, outside of getting the .dlls and controls registered and available, most third party controls, especially those from some of the larger vendor names in the business seem to work well with SharePoint 2010 and High Touch Point solutions. This would also include the Ajax Control Toolkit, a blend between .NET assemblies and client-side code. You can register it in your web.config file and use it in SharePoint.

If you re trying to write unit tests for LogOn(), you ll hit a problem. Right now, that code is directly coupled to two static methods on the FormsAuthentication class (Authenticate() and SetAuthCookie()). Ideally, your unit tests would supply some kind of mock FormsAuthentication object, and then they could test LogOn() s interaction with Forms Authentication (i.e., checking that it calls SetAuthCookie() only when Authenticate() returns true). However, Forms Authentication s API is built around static methods, so there s no easy way to mock it. Forms Authentication is quite an old piece of code, and unlike the more modern MVC Framework, it simply wasn t designed with unit testing in mind. The normal way to make legacy code unit testable is to wrap it inside an interface type. You create a class that implements the interface by simply delegating all calls to the original code. For example, add the following types anywhere in your SportsStore.WebUI project:

public interface IFormsAuth { bool Authenticate(string name, string password); void SetAuthCookie(string name, bool persistent); } public class FormsAuthWrapper : IFormsAuth { public bool Authenticate(string name, string password)
